New Developments On The Way: 11-11-11

I'm going into a self-imposed, semi-exile for exactly 2 weeks.

When I re-emerge, there will be new blogs, a revamped website, and new music- GOD WILLING!

See you in 14 days!

Lots of Love,

Elsie Law aka Starface

TODAY IS...

PLEASE PASS THIS ON! (EACH ONE TEACH ONE OR TWO!) THIS IS PHASE ONE ON HOW WE CAN HELP TO STRENGTHEN & EMPOWER OUR COMMUNITY:The 2008 not guilty verdict in the Sean Bell case evoked outrage, emotion, and debate. It is not an anomaly that the police officers involved in the Sean Bell slaying were acquitted of all charges on all counts in State Supreme Court. I could run out of ink printing the names of people who have been victimized by the inaptly named justice system.

The American justice system has been especially terroristic towards the African American community. Many community members can cite historic and personal accounts to prove this. Therefore, it would be foolhardy (at the least) to turn to a system that has methodically oppressed us, and request that they free us. We can only free ourselves through extreme discipline and intelligent planning.

As a community we have been too compliant with leaders who organize ineffective, delayed reactions. The only strategy that can save us in this last hour is one that calls for a collective code of conduct that will be conducive to improving the conditions of our community, and shifting the paradigm of how we are treated by outside entities. The first step of this code of conduct should be based on economics.

The old adage of “money talks,” still reigns true in the new millennium. Any political scientist worth his or her library card will tell you that: “Economic powerlessness equals political powerlessness,” and conversely “economic power equals political power.” This means that if we continue to allow our wealth to be extracted from our community, we will remain impotent.

The power of the collective “Black Dollar” is often discussed. However, that power has been left unchanneled. Today is the day to change that. A one-time boycott is not going to bring long-term change and respect to our community. Our community has launched boycotts before. Our success and ascension will be based on what we consistently do. For this reason, we should initiate “BUY BLACK FRIDAYS.”

BUY BLACK FRIDAYS is a small step towards our community acquiring power via controlling our economics. Every Friday, people who acknowledge the injustice and oppression that the African American community has been consistently subjected to should do one of the following:

Option #1: Spend $0 on Friday
Option #2: Spend no more than $10 on Friday
Option #3: Only Shop at Black Businesses on Friday
[PLEASE NOTE THAT THE ABOVE OPTIONS CAN & SHOULD BE EXERCISED ON A DAILY BASIS. However, we can all at the very least focus on Fridays. This way we can take a collective stand and build our collective discipline. Please remember that this is only Phase 1!].

To the people who are tempted to label “BUY BLACK FRIDAYS” as racist, I say this: In the big scheme of things, this is about right & wrong, justice & injustice. The African American community is a strong, proud community that has endured the brunt of America’s iron fist. We must stop the pounding. I feel that any fair-minded individual will concur, and join in.

ANY business that is privileged to enjoy the support of the African American community MUST return that support.

I thank you in advance for your effort and dedication.

Puppeteer and Creator of Elmo: Kevin Clash

Book Excerpt Of The Week- Part 1: From, “Virtually You: The Dangerous Powers of the E-Personality” By: Elias Aboujaoude

“The other crucial component to our cognitive life and to remembering is attention. All learning starts with the ability to focus and heed a teacher’s implorations to ‘pay attention.’ Yet our kids...and many of us, are showing an attention span in the classroom that is increasingly like their attention span on Facebook: Many have become more distractible and are unable to focus...for longer than it would take them to write a status update. This problem is suggested by the tremendous increase in the number of Ritalin prescriptions written over the last decade. Our children (and we) are less attentive than ever, and studies are questioning what role the virtual lifestyle may be playing in this.

Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most commonly diagnosed behavioral disorder of childhood, estimated to affect 3 percent to 5 percent of children, although adults are not spared. Children with ADHD typically show impairment across multiple areas of functioning, including, home, school, and peer relationships, and can have long-term problems with academic performance, professional success, and social development...

To date, several studies have shown a link between ADHD and excessive internet use. The largest of the studies conducted in school-age children involved 752 elementary students in South Korea and found that 33 percent of those who suffered from ADHD were ‘addicted’ to the internet. A study of an older age group- 216 college students in Taiwan- compared the rate of ADHD in adults who met the criteria for internet addiction to the rate of ADHD in adults who met criteria for Internet addiction to the rate of ADHD in those who were ‘normal’ users of the internet. The results showed that 3 percent of internet addicts had ADHD, compared to only 8 percent of non addicts. While these studies son not prove causality, the correlations are certainly striking and form a legitimate basis for questioning whether the internet may be making us attention-deficient.” -From, “Virtually You: The Dangerous Powers of the E-Personality” By: Elias Aboujaoude

Quote Of The Day

“A silly idea is current that good people do not know what temptation means. This is an obvious lie. Only those who try to resist temptation know how strong it is... A man who gives in to temptation after five minutes simply does not know what it would have been like an hour later. That is why bad people, in one sense, know very little about badness. They have lived a sheltered life by always giving in.” -C.S. Lewis

"Melanin is essentially involved in controlling all mental and physical body activities...The lack of melanin is directly related to the malfunctioning of the central nervous system, while the presence of melanin is directly associated with the proper functioning of the central nervous system. This is why we shouldn't do drugs because we're highly melanated people and the drugs- cocaine, even weed, all that stuff that you call liquor and brews, and lighting L's and all of this madness that we put in the system to destroy the system- it throws your melanin off." -Professor Griff

The beauty of a woman is seen in her eyes, because that is the doorway to her heart, the place where love resides. True beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul. It's the caring that she lovingly gives, the passion that she shows & the beauty of a woman only grows with passing years." -Audrey Hepburn

Quote Of The Day

"To be hopeful in bad times is not just foolishly romantic. It is based on the fact that human history is a history not only of cruelty, but also of compassion, sacrifice, courage, kindness.

What we choose to emphasize in this complex history will determine our lives. If we see only the worst, it destroys our capacity to do something. If we remember those times and places- and there are so many- where people have behaved magnificently, this gives us the energy to act, and at least the possibility of sending this spinning top of a world in a different direction.

And if we do act, in however small a way, we don’t have to wait for some grand utopian future. The future is an infinite succession of presents, and to live now as we think human beings should live, in defiance of all that is bad around us, is itself a marvelous victory." -Howard Zinn

Dreams vs. Vision

“The founders of the United States were men of vision, who used the land of others and the labor and knowledge of others to make their vision a reality. They have sustained their position of power and authority over Africans in America by destroying the Africans’ ability to visualize while encouraging them to dream.

There is a fundamental difference between a vision and a dream. Dreams are abstract illusions that occur when one is in an unconscious state of mind. Dreams dry up ‘like a raisin in the sun’ and lead to frustration, anger, and despair. Visions occur during a state of heightened awareness and provide insight into areas where the mind is trained and focused. Visions are capable of connecting a mind to a higher source of consciousness and empowerment. This is a spiritual law which leads to the fulfillment of thoughts and ideas, and, therefor, happiness.

It has been written: ‘Where there is no vision, the people perish, but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.’ This statement implies that the quality of your life is directly proportional to your ability to develop a vision and implement it throughout your lifetime. If this is done correctly, the power of that vision will be projected into the future and manifested for generations to come.

The Creator has given each of us the power of visualization, so that we may create a world of our own design. This power is negated if it is not used correctly and it will never be given to a people by a government or a religious system which once enslaved them. This message is of critical importance for Africans in America...Africans in America must develop the desire and the ability to create a vision for our future.” -From, “Survival Strategies For Africans In America” By: Anthony Browder

FREEDOM:
"Freedom is more than the right to do what you want, when you want, simply because you can. The cemeteries, prisons, hospitals, and streets are full of people who did what they wanted to do, at great expense to themselves, their families, and innocent bystanders.

Freedom means little by itself; it must be tempered with knowledge, wisdom, and spiritual direction for it to be of lasting value. You should desire the freedom to access information which will allow you to make the best choices possible; not just for yourself, but for your family, your descendants, and for the planet. We are all in this world together, and the freedoms that we exercise determine whether we will make this world a heaven or a hell." -Anthony Browder

They can be subdued by: low intensity warfare, psychological warfare, germ warfare, chemical warfare, infanticide, genocide, and mentacide (induced madness). Not all wars are fought in order to destroy an opponent, sometimes the objective is to simply terrorize them, or to contain and exploit them.

Justinian I, the Eastern Roman emperor who ruled from 527 to 565 A.C.E., commissioned coins to be minted with the face of an African Jesus on one side and his own distinctively European face on the other. Many Europeans of this era revered Africans and openly worshiped the “Black Madonna and Child” in shrines throughout Europe. As Europeans became more nationalistic, they developed a psychological need to create God in their own image, and the complexion of their religious icons changed from black to white. When Europeans became to colonize the world and enslave people of color, they imposed this new image of God on those the conquered.

Michelangelo’s painting of Adam and Eve in the Sistine Chapel in Rome, Italy is still accepted by people throughout the world as the legitimate likeness of the first couple. No one suspected that Michelangelo’s aunt and uncle were the models for the painting in 1508. Most of us have seen the image of Jesus the Christ and his disciples as portrayed by Leonardo da Vinci in his painting “The Last Supper.” We have been captivated by the beauty of this fifteenth century masterpiece, but few of us know that da Vinci hired a model to pose as Jesus, and 12 convicts to pose as his disciples. In reality, the image that we have held in such high esteem is unworthy of the admiration it has been given. It is a technically flawless painting but a terrible deceptive religious icon.” -From, “Survival Strategies For Africans In America” By: Anthony Browder

Quote Of The Day

"Somewhere in the annals of European literature someone wrote that 'ignorance is bliss;' but in the ancient record of African philosophy is the belief that 'ignorance is sinful.' Most of us have been conditioned to live our lives in a sinful state of blissful ignorance while thinking we were actually being saved. If we equated ignorance with sinfulness we would be more inclined to conduct independent research into the origins of our current beliefs and practices. We would then become aware of many startling revelations." -Anthony Browder

Prejudice vs Racism

"All people have prejudices; this may be considered to be one of humankind's great failings. However, for a group to be legitimately classified as racist, it must possess the power to impose its prejudices on members of other ethnic groups. Power transforms a 'pre-judged belief' into an ideology that is popularized, legitimized, and finally, incorporated into the legislative, judicial, religious, and social system designed to control the powerless." -From, "Survival Strategies For Africans In America" By: Anthony Browder

Quote Of The Day

"Disparaging comments made in jest, whether in the lyrics of a song or a conversation, have a potentially lingering effect and must be neutralized before they become ingrained in the consciousness of the society." -Anthony Browder

"If more athletes, coaches, and trainers would incorporate nutrition into their daily routine the way they do physical exercise, they would stand a better chance of becoming champions. Because they don't, the average life expectancy of a professional athlete is fifty-four years of age. Believe it or not, many a wino's life expectancy is longer than that. One day, when researchers stop being so awed by the game of sports, they will see a thing call sports abuse. Then athletes will learn to play sports without abusing their bodies." -Dick Gregory

Dick Gregory On Police Brutality

“The relationship between Black folks and many White cops in this country is so far out of hand, and at some point we Black folks have to start taking some of that blame. We let police brutality run rampant through our community. There are thousands of Black police officers across this country. When have you ever read in the paper that a Black cop handcuffed a White person and shot them in the back of the head?...They don’t mess with White folks because they know that White folks won’t tolerate it, plain and simple. When we Black folks decide that we are not going to tolerate police brutality, then it will stop. There’s something wrong with a people who have more fear for their enemy than they have love for their children. We have to understand and say to America and the police that enough is enough. We can ay it through commerce and shut this country down.” -From, “Callus On My Soul” By: Dick Gregory

Quote Of The Day

"Although America has only one-twentieth of the world's population, we consume 67 percent of the world's drugs. So now you know the rest of the world doesn't have the drug problem that America has. We must then ask ourselves, is this the price we pay for racism? Is this the price we pay for putting our foot on one group of people to make them stay down? Is this the price we pay to let the foot stay on us, without fighting back?" -Dick Gregory

Quote Of The Day

"Sometimes they insult our Black women in ways we don't even realize, it's almost on code. What I mean by code is, for example, when a White man dresses like a woman, he is called a transvestite or a cross dresser. But when RuPaul dresses like a woman, the same media refers to him as a beautiful Black woman. What they are really doing, in my opinion, is making a statement to Black women: We are getting ready to kill you: kill your image of beauty, kill you image as a mother, as a sister and an aunt, and eventually kill your spirit." -Dick Gregory

Quote Of The Day

"I love books, by the way, way more than movies. Movies tell you what to think. A good book lets you choose a few thoughts for yourself. Movies show you the pink house. A good book tells you there's a pink house and lets you paint some of the finishing touches, maybe choose the roof style, park your own car out front. My imagination has always topped anything a movie could come up with." -Karen Marie Moning
