TODAY IS...

The 2008 not guilty verdict in the Sean Bell case evoked outrage, emotion, and debate. It is not an anomaly that the police officers involved in the Sean Bell slaying were acquitted of all charges on all counts in State Supreme Court. I could run out of ink printing the names of people who have been victimized by the inaptly named justice system.
The American justice system has been especially terroristic towards the African American community. Many community members can cite historic and personal accounts to prove this. Therefore, it would be foolhardy (at the least) to turn to a system that has methodically oppressed us, and request that they free us. We can only free ourselves through extreme discipline and intelligent planning.
As a community we have been too compliant with leaders who organize ineffective, delayed reactions. The only strategy that can save us in this last hour is one that calls for a collective code of conduct that will be conducive to improving the conditions of our community, and shifting the paradigm of how we are treated by outside entities. The first step of this code of conduct should be based on economics.
The old adage of “money talks,” still reigns true in the new millennium. Any political scientist worth his or her library card will tell you that: “Economic powerlessness equals political powerlessness,” and conversely “economic power equals political power.” This means that if we continue to allow our wealth to be extracted from our community, we will remain impotent.
The power of the collective “Black Dollar” is often discussed. However, that power has been left unchanneled. Today is the day to change that. A one-time boycott is not going to bring long-term change and respect to our community. Our community has launched boycotts before. Our success and ascension will be based on what we consistently do. For this reason, we should initiate “BUY BLACK FRIDAYS.”
BUY BLACK FRIDAYS is a small step towards our community acquiring power via controlling our economics. Every Friday, people who acknowledge the injustice and oppression that the African American community has been consistently subjected to should do one of the following:
Option #1: Spend $0 on Friday
Option #2: Spend no more than $10 on Friday
Option #3: Only Shop at Black Businesses on Friday
[PLEASE NOTE THAT THE ABOVE OPTIONS CAN & SHOULD BE EXERCISED ON A DAILY BASIS. However, we can all at the very least focus on Fridays. This way we can take a collective stand and build our collective discipline. Please remember that this is only Phase 1!].
To the people who are tempted to label “BUY BLACK FRIDAYS” as racist, I say this: In the big scheme of things, this is about right & wrong, justice & injustice. Anecdote Of The Week
"How often do you let other people's nonsense change your mood?Do you let a bad driver, rude waiter, curt boss, or an insensitive employee ruin your day? Unless you're the Terminator, for an instant, you're probably set back on your heels. However, the mark of a successful person is how quickly she/he can get back her/his focus on what's important.Five years ago I learned this lesson. I learned it in the back of a taxicab in Indianapolis. Here's what happened:
I hopped in a taxi and we took off for Indianapolis Airport. We were driving in the right lane when, all of a sudden, a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver slammed on his breaks, skidded, and missed the other car's back end by just inches!The driver of the other car, the guy who almost caused a big accident, whipped his head around and he started yelling bad words at us. My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. And, I mean, he was friendly. So, I said, 'Why did you just do that? This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!' And this is when my taxi driver told me what I now call, 'The Law of the Garbage Truck.'
"Many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it. And if you let them, they'll dump it on you. When someone wants to dump on you, don't take it personally. You just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. You'll be happy you did.

Yesterday, The Supreme Court overturned a decision by a lower court that would have allowed for the release of photographs allegedly showing Iraqi prisoners being abused by occupying soldiers.The Supreme Court's decision was reportedly bolstered by a law that was recently passed, which allows The Secretary of Defense to prohibit the photographs' release in the name of national security.
Dissenters to The Supreme Court's decision claim that withholding the violates The Freedom of Information Act. This issue has been passed down to The United States Court of Appeals.

According to Forbes, China has a surprising new burgeoning asset- Garlic.Forbes states that the wholesale price of garlic has multiplied 40 times since March; causing it to surpass gold as the "best-performing asset in China."

[How retailers operate online is being challenged internationally.According to The BBC, French eBay retailers are banned from selling certain high-end perfumes. This includes fragrances produced by Givenchy, Christian Dior, and Louis Vuitton. The director of eBay Europe is quoted by the BBC as saying, "This injunction is an abuse of 'selective distribution.' It effectively enforces restrictive distribution contracts, which is anti-competitive."
A Parisian court recently fined eBay 1.7 million Euros for violating the aforementioned injunction.

The American justice system has been especially terroristic towards the African American community. Many community members can cite historic and personal accounts to prove this. Therefore, it would be foolhardy (at the least) to turn to a system that has methodically oppressed us, and request that they free us. We can only free ourselves through extreme discipline and intelligent planning.
As a community we have been too compliant with leaders who organize ineffective, delayed reactions. The only strategy that can save us in this last hour is one that calls for a collective code of conduct that will be conducive to improving the conditions of our community, and shifting the paradigm of how we are treated by outside entities. The first step of this code of conduct should be based on economics.
The old adage of “money talks,” still reigns true in the new millennium. Any political scientist worth his or her library card will tell you that: “Economic powerlessness equals political powerlessness,” and conversely “economic power equals political power.” This means that if we continue to allow our wealth to be extracted from our community, we will remain impotent.
The power of the collective “Black Dollar” is often discussed. However, that power has been left unchanneled. Today is the day to change that. A one-time boycott is not going to bring long-term change and respect to our community. Our community has launched boycotts before. Our success and ascension will be based on what we consistently do. For this reason, we should initiate “BUY BLACK FRIDAYS.”
BUY BLACK FRIDAYS is a small step towards our community acquiring power via controlling our economics. Every Friday, people who acknowledge the injustice and oppression that the African American community has been consistently subjected to should do one of the following:
Option #1: Spend $0 on Friday
Option #2: Spend no more than $10 on Friday
Option #3: Only Shop at Black Businesses on Friday
[PLEASE NOTE THAT THE ABOVE OPTIONS CAN & SHOULD BE EXERCISED ON A DAILY BASIS. However, we can all at the very least focus on Fridays. This way we can take a collective stand and build our collective discipline. Please remember that this is only Phase 1!].
To the people who are tempted to label “BUY BLACK FRIDAYS” as racist, I say this: In the big scheme of things, this is about right & wrong, justice & injustice. The African American community is a strong, proud community that has endured the brunt of America’s iron fist. We must stop the pounding. I feel that any fair-minded individual will concur, and join in.
ANY business that is privileged to enjoy the support of the African American community MUST return that support.

It is not an anomaly that the police officers involved in the Sean Bell slaying were acquitted of all charges on all counts in State Supreme Court. [SIDEBAR: I caught wind of the following article from a twitter posting.]According to the LA Times, a recent court ruling found that the United States' Army Corps of Engineers displayed 'gross negligence' when it came to maintaining the leeves in New Orleans. A federal judge stated that the negligence contributed to the breaking of the levees during Hurricane Katrina.
The aforementioned ruling could potentially leave the American government liable to pay out billions of dollars in damages.

Anecdote Of The Week: What Are The Movements Of A Great Leader?
"One of the ways I measure a good leader is by assessing the strength of the number two person. Would the organization function if the leader was not present? Insecure leaders make it difficult for the number two person to grow to their full potential.I have had the privilege of observing geese fly south for the winter. It is amazing to see them fly. It is majestic the way they fly so effortlessly. If you look closer at geese, you will find that there is an order, a science, in the way they position themselves when they fly. They fly in a "V" formation.
There is a scientific reason for this. Researchers found that as each goose flaps its wings, an updraft is created for the bird immediately following. Studies show that this "V" formation adds at least 71 percent greater power than if the birds had flown alone.
There really is benefit in doing thing together. The real beauty is not just the strength that they gain from each other in the "V" formation, but the lead geese on both sides of the "V" are encouraged by each other. The noise being made are geese cheering for the leaders to keep the faith and keep the speed. When the lead geese are tired, they rotate to the back of the "V" and others will assume the point position. It is truly remarkable to observe.
If one goose becomes ill or is shot and falls out of formation, two other geese will follow and nurture the goose hopefully to health. If the goose dies, they will form a new "V" formation and attempt to catch the original group. Converting the United States' electrical grid so it is compatible with "digital age" technology is a multi-billion dollar undertaking. President Obama recently revealed his plan to disperse $3.4 billion in stimulus grants to help facilitate the conversion.According to The Wall Street Journal, "about 100 companies and communities in 45 states and territories will receive federal subsidies to modernize the electric grid. The administration promised the projects would create 'tens of thousands of jobs.'"
The Wall Street Journal also reports that companies and regions in Florida received more than $267 million in grant money; and North Carolina received more than $400 million.

New York State is seeking to implement harsher DWI laws. Under newly proposed legislation, it would be a felony to drive while intoxicated with a minor as a passenger.
The proposed legislation also calls for first-time convicted drunk drivers to be required to install a device in their vehicle that will prevent them from driving if they have been drinking.

New York's City Council will be convening tomorrow to decide whether or not to pass a law that will require business owners to provide paid sick days for their employees. According to The New York Daily News: "If the bill passes, employers with 10 or more workers would have to provide nine paid sick days per year. Black History Fact Of The Day
"George Washington Carver was born in Diamond Groove, Missouri, in 1864. He worked his way through Simpson and Iowa State colleges and completed his masters degree. He accepted a position with Iowa University in Iowa City, the first African American to do so. He received a letter from Booker T. Washington asking to join him as they would work together to educate Blacks in the South. George Washington Carver left the comforts and prestige of Iowa University and arrived in Tuskegee, Alabama, where there was little money, few scientific resources, but two men with a vision.George Washington Carver inspired his students and continued to do research. He helped farmers around the region to rotate their crops, showing them the importance of replenishing the soil. He developed more than 325 products from the peanut and sweet potato. Presidents called him their friend. Scientists from around the world sought his advice and opinion.
In the early 1900s, Thomas Edison offered to pay him $100,000 to work in a laboratory designed to his specifications if he would leave Tuskegee. Henry Ford matched that figure and offered him a job with the Ford Motor Company. Can you imagine what $100,000 would be worth in today's figures?...

According to The New York Times, the wind farm "will be financed largely by Chinese banks, with the help of loan guarantees and cash grants from the United States government...The wind farm will be the first instance of a Chinese manufacturer exporting wind turbines to the United States."

TODAY IS...

THIS IS PHASE ONE ON HOW WE CAN HELP TO STRENGTHEN & EMPOWER OUR COMMUNITY:The 2008 not guilty verdict in the Sean Bell case evoked outrage, emotion, and debate. It is not an anomaly that the police officers involved in the Sean Bell slaying were acquitted of all charges on all counts in State Supreme Court. I could run out of ink printing the names of people who have been victimized by the inaptly named justice system.
The American justice system has been especially terroristic towards the African American community. Many community members can cite historic and personal accounts to prove this. Therefore, it would be foolhardy (at the least) to turn to a system that has methodically oppressed us, and request that they free us. We can only free ourselves through extreme discipline and intelligent planning.
As a community we have been too compliant with leaders who organize ineffective, delayed reactions. The only strategy that can save us in this last hour is one that calls for a collective code of conduct that will be conducive to improving the conditions of our community, and shifting the paradigm of how we are treated by outside entities. The first step of this code of conduct should be based on economics.
The old adage of “money talks,” still reigns true in the new millennium. Any political scientist worth his or her library card will tell you that: “Economic powerlessness equals political powerlessness,” and conversely “economic power equals political power.” This means that if we continue to allow our wealth to be extracted from our community, we will remain impotent.
The power of the collective “Black Dollar” is often discussed. However, that power has been left unchanneled. Today is the day to change that. A one-time boycott is not going to bring long-term change and respect to our community. Our community has launched boycotts before. Our success and ascension will be based on what we consistently do. For this reason, we should initiate “BUY BLACK FRIDAYS.”

Warren Buffet's company, Berkshire Hathaway, just made its biggest purchase in the company's history.According to CNN, Berkshire Hathaway brought Burlington Northern Sante Fe for $44 billion.
Burlington Northern is a railroad operation. However, they also own other businesses such as: Fruit of the Loom, and Geico.
CNN states that news of the acquisition caused Burlington Northern's stocks to rise 28% on the morning of the announcement.

A clandestine prison in New York City is reportedly holding 250 detainees. According to The New York Times, the immigration jail is housed in a federal office building near lower Manhattan; and few people are aware of its existence. The Times states that the "facility takes in 11,000 men a year, most of them longtime New Yorkers facing deportation without a lawyer...Galvanized by [a] petition, the bar association sent volunteers to the jail to offer legal counsel to detainees."The volunteer lawyers have found that most of the detainees have a legitimate claim to stay in the U.S. However, the system allows immigrant detainees to be imprisoned without the privilege of legal representation. They can also be moved to various facilities around the country without notice. This makes it very difficult for the immigration prisoners to legally defend themselves. Attention is being brought to this situation, in hopes that it can be rectified soon.

Can Curry Help Cure Cancer?
A team of British scientists claim that their experiments have shown that curry spice can kill off cancer cells. According to The BBC, a team of scientists "found that curcumin (an extract found in the bright yellow curry spice, tumeric) started to kill cancer cells [with]in 24 hours [of contact]...The cells also began to digest themselves after the curcumin triggered lethal cell death signals."
Curcumin is also being tested as a cure for dementia and arthritis.

The internet is about to go through a transformation that The BBC says has been described as: "the biggest change to the way the internet works since it was created 40 years ago." The change is expected to narrow language barriers amongst internet users.Internet domain names in languages such as Arabic, Chinese, and Russian will soon be implemented (likely by next year). The plan for the use of "non-Latin script" in website addresses was approved by The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (Icann) in 2008. However, since the approval, the system has been going through testing.
The BBC states that the objective of the new domain name systems is "to create a universal internet address code that will work in any language and every place so all the world's computers can connect with each other."

According to The New York Times, Congress recently approved legislation that allows The Environmental Protection Agency to relocate residents. Under the guise of this legislation residents of the Kansas town, Treece, have reportedly been brought out of their residencies. The town was allegedly toxically contaminated from lead and zinc mining.
[SIDEBAR: I wonder what the government will do with the recently purchased parcel of land. Will it be sanitized (if possible) and returned to the former residents? Will it eventually be built on? If so, what will be built?]

"She was Queen and General of Angola. She was a military genius. Her favorite strategies were surprise attacks and infiltrating enemy ranks. The Portuguese were trying to control Angola. They were effectively using the theory of divide and conquer and were pitting Africans against Africans. Queen Nzingha took advantage of this and literally had more of her soldiers in their ranks than they had. She successfully warded off the attacks of the Portuguese for more than 40 years.Not only was she a great military genius, she was an intense negotiator. The Governor of Portugal called for negotiations and a treaty to be established between the Portuguese and the Angolans. In the meeting room the Governor had his executive cabinet and military officers all around him and he was comfortably sitting in a chair. When the Queen entered with her men, the executive council and military officers did not stand to greet her. The Governor smirked. He designed the room so that the only chair in the room would be his. Queen Nzingha was always prepared, battle filed or negotiations. Earlier this month McGraw Hill entered into negotiations to sell their entity Business Week to Bloomberg L.P.According to The Wall Street Journal, the magazine will likely be renamed "Bloomberg Business Week." A citizen of the UK is accused of hacking into America's military computer system. According to the BBC, the accused allegedly stated that he "was just seeking UFO evidence."The alleged UK hacker's extradition to the United States has been halted for medical reasons. However, In addition to the plaintiff's illness; the BBC states that the extradition is also on hold "until an inquiry into the US-UK extradition treaty has been carried out by the Commons Home Affairs Select Committee...Critics of the treaty say it does not treat US and British citizens equally."

Newsletter News Brief: The Possible Dangers of Alcohol In Mouthwash
I had a facebook friend warn me about the dangers of flouride. However, I also found this information online (on the website for natural health information) regarding mouthwash:"Mouthwashes with an alcohol content over 25% have been implicated in mouth, tongue and throat cancers. Note, the forms of alcohol used in cosmetics are not necessarily those used in alcoholic drinks, and may be much more dangerous."

Peter J. Delfyett developed "the worlds fastest, most powerful modelocked semiconductor laser diode." [SIDEBAR: Don't ask me what that is or how it functions. Lol.] In 2004, Dr. Delfyett was named one of the 50 Most Important Blacks in Research Science by Science Spectrum Magazine and Career Communications Group. He has also received: The National Science Foundations Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, The 1999 University Distinguished Researcher of the Year Award, The 2000 Black Engineer of the Year Award, and the 2000 Excellence in Graduate Teaching Award.

Google has reportedly struck a licensing deal with the 4 major record labels (Warner Music Group, EMI, Sony, and Universal), which will allow them to permit Google-users to buy and listen to music from the Google search results page. The deal is said to be a maneuver by Google to stay relevant and competitive with new search engines- namely Microsoft's Bing.According to The Wall Street Journal, while Google is the clear leader in the search engine market (they had 64.9% of the online queries in the U.S.); Microsoft's Bing is slowly increasing in popularity. Bing had 9.4% of the queries in the United States in September 2009. This is a 1.4% increase from their May 2009 stats.

The New York Department of Education had slated 500 school aides to be fired on October 19, 2009. However, this action was halted when the New York State Supreme Court issued a temporary restraining order on the layoffs. The judge stated that he wanted to be certain that the layoffs didn't violate the New York State Constitution and Education Law.
According to The Amsterdam News, a union leader has stated that the attempted layoffs were initiated in bad faith. The union rep has stated that: "The city even offered to hire the laid off school aides to help out with the H1N1 school vaccinations programs without health benefits just for a couple of weeks."
The parties to the lawsuit are due back in court today to discuss the issue.

Sunday's Op-Ed
I think that one of the best ways to learn how something works is to objectively observe it, and break down how all of the pieces operate and connect. Learning how this world and “the system” operates requires the patience and astuteness to watch a slippery morphing quagmire disguised in hidden agenda.America promotes the image that it prides itself on democracy and its democratic process. However, we only have to examine the inequities that exist in the nation to realize that the “democratic process” is not all that it is promoted to be.
For the past few years, I’ve attended a slew of community council and community board meetings to observe how the political pieces function and connect on a local level.
I’ve seen politicians renege on promises and get re-elected. I’ve seen politicians voice one opinion and plan of action in one community district, and voice an entirely opposite plan and opinion in another district. I’ve seen people crying out for proper representation from their local politicians, and I’ve seen an absence of what I feel are the real sentiments of the majority of the community at meetings that are supposed to help that very community. After all of these experiences, I can’t help but notice the disingenuous nature that exists in all of the political pandering.
Some politicians are quick to jump in front of a television camera, or behind a radio microphone, and bewail violent deaths that happen in the street. Yet these same politicians allow sports stadiums to be built with hundreds-and-millions of dollars of city funds in the midst of a hiring freeze on teachers, and in the midst of little or no money being funneled into community programs and centers that could help to greatly decrease the violence. However, another side of this issue must also be explored.
We, the people, must demand certain services. Unfortunately, certain elected representatives aren’t going to act in the community’s best interest just because it’s in their job description. If we continue to allow politicians to pander to us by throwing holiday and summer parties, while the funds are going out of the back door to be disbursed in a way that is not in our best interest; then that is exactly what will happen.
I think that our vote and voice is effective collectively. Some members of some community districts have organized exactly who they will put into office before the election even occurs. This makes the politician starkly aware of who they are beholden to. If we do not exercise our vote collectively and determinedly then it is weak and of no consequence. Accountability must be stressed.
I’ve also conversed with people who do not believe in participating in the political process at all due to the rank deceit that plagues it. I can definitely understand this point of view. [SIDEBAR: There is a possibility that I too may one day join these ranks.] However, again I feel that if we do choose not to participate in voting because of the system’s gross inequities; we still must make a collective and determined decision. Our community still needs resources. Our community still bolsters the city funds with our tax monies. Monies that are being used to build extravagant sports stadiums, while our children hunger (mentally and physically). Therefore, I ask myself and others, “What should be done?”
