According to Information Week, the United Kingdom has outsourced the manufacturing of their controversial passport/identification card to American companies- Computer Sciences Corporation and IBM. The manufacturing contracts are reportedly worth almost a billion dollars.
The passport/identification cards implement extremely intrusive technology that store fingerprints and facial biometric data.
Allegedly the British government will attempt to require all of their citizens to carry the I'd cards. People are noting how "1984/Big Brother" these cards are. The question is whether or not the people will accept it. The U.K. is already infamous for having an inordinate amount of public surveillance cameras.
