New Jersey lawmakers are proposing a bill that would require first time drunk driving offenders to install a lock on their vehicle's ignition that would require a breathalizer test before the vehicle will start. The bill states that this requirement would be mandatory for drivers who have been caught with a blood-alcohol content of .15 or higher (which is almost twice the Garden State's legal limit).
If this law is passed in New Jersey, it will make New Jersey the 12th state to implement legislation of this kind. Washington, Nebraska, New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, Louisiana, and Alaska require the "breathalizer locks" for all DWI first time offenders regardless of their blood-alcohol levels.
