Book Excerpt Of The Week, "The Assault On Reason" By: Al Gore

Here's Al Gore's take on the Hurricane Katrina tragedy:
"The one event in recent years that probably did more than anything else to convince Americans to look differently at the climate crisis was the catastrophic damage inflicted by Hurricane Katrina. As we all watched the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina unfold, we all had a lot of different thoughts and feelings. But all those feelings were mixed in with puzzlement at why there was no immediate response, and why there was not an adequate plan in place.

We were told that this was not a time to point fingers, even as some of those saying 'Don't point fingers' were themselves pointing fingers at the victims of the tragedy, who did not- many of whom could not- evacuate the City of New Orleans because they didn't have automobiles and they did not have adequate public transportation.

We were told this was not a time to hold our national government accountable because there were more important matters that confronted us. But this is not an either/or choice. They are linked together.

As our nation belatedly found effective ways to help those who were so hard hit by Hurricane Katrina, it was important to learn the right lessons from what happened, lest we were spoon fed the wrong lessons. After all, if we do not absorb the right lessons from history, we are, in the historian's phrase, doomed to repeat the mistakes that have already been made.

All of us know that our nation failed the people of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast.

When the corpses of American citizens are floating in toxic flood waters five days after a hurricane strikes, it is time not only to respond directly to the victims of the catastrophe, but to hold the processes of our nation accountable, and the leaders of our nation accountable, for the failures that have taken place...

There were dire warnings, three days before Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, that if it followed the path it was then on, the levees would break, and the City of New Orleans would drown, and thousands of people would be at risk...What happened was not only knowable, it was known- in advance, in great and pain staking detail. Emergency management officials had even done table top planning exercises and identified exactly what would take place, according to the scientific evidence. But members of the administration ignored all of that. Where there is no vision, the people perish. It's not only that there was no vision; it's that there has been a misguided vision. The Bush administration has appeared to diminish the ability of the federal government to do its job." -From, "The Assault On Reason" By: Al Gore

Elsie Law's Daily Dose Of The Law

Voluntary manslaughter is "manslaughter committed voluntarily upon a sudden heat of the passions; as if, upon a sudden quarrel, two persons fight, and one of them kills the other. It is the unlawful taking of human life under circumstances falling short of willful or deliberate intent to kill and approaching too near thereto to be justifiable homicide" -From, "Black's Law Dictionary

TODAY IS...

PLEASE PASS THIS ON! (EACH ONE TEACH ONE OR TWO!) THIS IS PHASE ONE ON HOW WE CAN HELP TO STRENGTHEN & EMPOWER OUR COMMUNITY:The 2008 not guilty verdict in the Sean Bell case evoked outrage, emotion, and debate. It is not an anomaly that the police officers involved in the Sean Bell slaying were acquitted of all charges on all counts in State Supreme Court. I could run out of ink printing the names of people who have been victimized by the inaptly named justice system.

The American justice system has been especially terroristic towards the African American community. Many community members can cite historic and personal accounts to prove this. Therefore, it would be foolhardy (at the least) to turn to a system that has methodically oppressed us, and request that they free us. We can only free ourselves through extreme discipline and intelligent planning.

As a community we have been too compliant with leaders who organize ineffective, delayed reactions. The only strategy that can save us in this last hour is one that calls for a collective code of conduct that will be conducive to improving the conditions of our community, and shifting the paradigm of how we are treated by outside entities. The first step of this code of conduct should be based on economics.

The old adage of “money talks,” still reigns true in the new millennium. Any political scientist worth his or her library card will tell you that: “Economic powerlessness equals political powerlessness,” and conversely “economic power equals political power.” This means that if we continue to allow our wealth to be extracted from our community, we will remain impotent.

The power of the collective “Black Dollar” is often discussed. However, that power has been left unchanneled. Today is the day to change that. A one-time boycott is not going to bring long-term change and respect to our community. Our community has launched boycotts before. Our success and ascension will be based on what we consistently do. For this reason, we should initiate “BUY BLACK FRIDAYS.”

BUY BLACK FRIDAYS is a small step towards our community acquiring power via controlling our economics. Every Friday, people who acknowledge the injustice and oppression that the African American community has been consistently subjected to should do one of the following:

Option #1: Spend $0 on Friday
Option #2: Spend no more than $10 on Friday
Option #3: Only Shop at Black Businesses on Friday
[PLEASE NOTE THAT THE ABOVE OPTIONS CAN & SHOULD BE EXERCISED ON A DAILY BASIS. However, we can all at the very least focus on Fridays. This way we can take a collective stand and build our collective discipline. Please remember that this is only Phase 1!].

To the people who are tempted to label “BUY BLACK FRIDAYS” as racist, I say this: In the big scheme of things, this is about right & wrong, justice & injustice. The African American community is a strong, proud community that has endured the brunt of America’s iron fist. We must stop the pounding. I feel that any fair-minded individual will concur, and join in.

ANY business that is privileged to enjoy the support of the African American community MUST return that support.

I thank you in advance for your effort and dedication.

The Legal Eagles Legal Brief: The Case Of The Right Of The Defendant To Have A Psychiatric Competency Evaluation

“In Ake v. Oklahoma, the Court said: ‘When a State brings its judicial power to bear on an indigent defendant in a criminal proceeding, it must take steps to assure that the defendant has a fair opportunity to present his defense...Justice cannot be equal where, simply as a result of his poverty, a defendant is denied the opportunity to participate meaningfully in a judicial proceeding in which his liberty is at stake.” -From, “The Innocent Man” By: John Grisham

This ruling pertains to the mental state of the defendant. Ake v. Oklahoma is a legal precedent that ensures that a defendant has the right to have a psychiatric evaluation to determine their ability to competently stand trial. The state must provide the defendant with this evaluation, if the defendant requests it.

When Artificial Intelligence Is Not So Artificial...

Scientists have created a "biological robot" that is being powered by a rat's brain. Neurons from the brain of the rat, sends signals to the robotic device, directing it to maneuver around objects.

Currently, the robot's creators are reportedly fulfilling their aspirations of "teaching" the robot. According to the BBC, the research team "is now getting the robot to learn how to navigate. Eventually the robot will be able to recognize familiar surroundings it has memorized."

Professor Kevin Warwick, who is the scientist in charge of the project, has stated: "This new research is tremendously exciting as firstly the biological brain controls its own moving robot body, and secondly it will enable us to investigate how the brain learns and memorizes its experiences."

Taking artificial intelligence to this kind of unprecedented level, where an inanimate object is combined with animal matter, can open all kinds of dangerous doors. This Pandora's Box is probably better left closed.

With inventions like this, how long is it before we are terminator status?

This week, marks the three year anniversary of the Hurricane Katrina/Levees Breaking tragedy.

Anecdote Of The Week: What Kind Of Monarch Are You?

I came across this anecdote in a couple of Dan Millman's books:

"There was once a beloved king whose castle was on a high hill, overlooking his shire. He was so popular that the nearby townspeople sent him gifts daily, and his birthday celebration was enjoyed throughout the kingdom. The people loved him for his renowned wisdom and fair judgments.

One day, tragedy struck the town. The water supply was polluted, and every man, woman, and child went insane. Only the king, who had a private spring, was spared.

Soon after the tragedy, the mad townspeople began speaking of how the king was acting 'strangely' and how his judgments were poor and his wisdom a sham. Many even went so far as to say that the king had gone crazy. His popularity soon vanished. No longer did the people bring him gifts or celebrate his birthday.

Then one day, the king, desperately lonely, paid a visit to the town and knowingly drank from the public fountain. That night marked a great celebration, because the king had 'regained his sanity.'"

Since we are all rulers of our own domain, in one way or another; the aforementioned tale provokes me to rhetorically ask, "What kind of monarch are you?" What would you do in the king's situation? [SIDEBAR: Way too many have drank the kool aid.]

Cops Gone Wild Part 16: The Slide Out The Whip And Pistol Whip A Motorist Edition

A New York City man who was allegedly pummeled by two off-duty female police officers in a road rage incident, is suing the city for $25 million.

The widely reported event resulted with the lawsuit filing motorist incurring head injuries so severe that twenty-five staples were required to close his skull. The motorist was allegedly beaten by the officers when his car door blocked the way of the officers' vehicle. Upset at being delayed, the off-duty cops allegedly initiated an expletive laden verbal assault on the motorist. When the motorist responded in kind, the female officers allegedly escalated the situation by becoming physical.

The victim and witnesses recount that the two women exited their vehicle, and proceeded to pistol whip and mace their provoked adversary while shouting: "Do you know who you are-f-ing with? We are the police."

As a result of their actions, the two police women were charged with gang assault, and have been stripped of their guns and badges. Both officers plead not guilty to the charges at a recent arraignment. Meanwhile, the recovering motorist is seeking eight figures for his pain and suffering. The $25 million amount that he is suing for appears to be comparable to the equation of $1,000,000 per skull staple.

[SIDEBAR: At least the motorist in this situation is still alive to sue. In another recent off-duty cop/road rage incident a young father lost his life, and no charges were filed against the officer involved. Manslaughter is "the unlawful killing of a human without malice and without premeditation and deliberation. It is of two kinds: voluntary and involuntary. Criminal homicide constitutes manslaughter when: (a) it is committed recklessly; or (b) a homicide which would otherwise be murder is committed under the influence of extreme mental or emotional disturbance for which there s reasonable explanation or excuse. The reasonableness of such explanation or excuse shall be determined from the viewpoint of a person in the actor's situation under the circumstances as he believes them to be." -From, "Black's Law Dictionary"

Invention Spotlight: Solar Panel Windows

A new invention may allow homeowners to use their windows to generate electricity. Scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), have concocted a "solar concentrator" that can help channel sunlight into a viable power source.

According to The Independent, the "solar concentrator is made from a film of organic molecules that can be coated on to glass window panes or other surfaces exposed to sunlight. The MIT solar concentrator involves a mixture of two or more dyes that are painted onto a pane of glass or plastic. These dyes absorb light across a range of different wavelengths, which is then re-emitted at a different wavelength and transported across the pane to the waiting solar cells at the edges." This technique of concentrating power is reportedly, "10 times more powerful than conventional methods of producing energy from sunlight."

With everyone understandably jumping on the "Go Green" bandwagon, this invention is likely to become popular in the future. However, before the solar concentrator can be widely utilized, the process has to be perfected. Also, Go Green pundits can only be so gung-ho when it comes to this new procedure because the costs of implementing it is currently very high. Patience will have to be exercised as scientists streamline is efficiency, and find ways to make its usage cheaper.

The Creepy Future Of Child Birth Creation

It seems that when some governments around the globe aren't using their riches to fund wars, they are digging into their coffers to sponsor scientists to conduct experiments that tamper with mother nature in obscene ways.

According to The Independent, in about 3 decades, the methods of bringing a child into the world will be drastically expanded in a manner that will make science fiction look like a fairytale. The UK news source states that scientists are "forecasting an end to infertility with the potential for any person of any age from one to 100 to have children. In place of a normal pregnancy, gestation might take place in an artificial womb." These scientists are also stating that the cloning of babies is also likely to be a reality in the future.

Cops Gone Wild Part 15: The Machine Gun Funk Edition

Some New Jersey residents are in a funk over their local police department stockpiling heavy artillery. Bergen County's police departments are using federal money received from Homeland Security grants to purchase machine guns. Police officials are reportedly allowing officers to use their personal discretion to decide when to implement usage of the weaponry.

It seems extreme to some that a suburban police department, with a very low crime rate, would find it necessary to amass assault rifles that can fire "10 bullets per second." However, according to CBS news, this is a trend that is spreading across various New Jersey police departments.

CBS states that the head of the National Police Defense Foundation is using the reasoning that "after the massacre at Columbine, police departments started realizing they couldn't wait for the S.W.A.T. team or for Emergency Services to bring them sophisticated rifles."

Although there are residents who are comfortable with this line of reasoning, like others, I personally doubt that readily having machine guns on hand would have deterred the Columbine event. So what exactly is the New Jersey police preparing for?

Book Excerpt Of The Week- Part 2, "What The Bleep Do We Know!?" By: Arntz, Chasse, and Vicente

"I am reminded constantly of Gandhi's statement, 'Be the change you want to see in the world.' For many this is an elusive idea. The notion that somehow me changing is going to affect the rest of reality seems well...like a sweet idea. But when you look at the work that Radin, Sheldrake, Hagelin or Laszlo are doing, Gandhi's statement is starting to make more sense. Why should we be the change we want to see? Cops Gone Wild Part 14: The Still In Denial After Paying Over $2 Million For Your Sins Edition

After an elapse of five years, and an approximately seven-figure legal tab, NYC has decided to settle a lawsuit brought against the municipality by a group of protesters.

The protesters, which included famed attorney William Kunstler's daughter- who is also a lawyer, were demonstrating the Iraq War outside the offices of the Carlyle Group. NYPD charged that during the protest, the demonstrators unlawfully blocked a sidewalk; therefore, they arrested them. However, according to The Gothamist, "videos from that day (including one taken by the NYPD) show a different scene, with protesters lined along the sidewalk- with ample space for pedestrians" to pass by. Still, the protesters were reportedly "arrested without [being given] any police warning, or an opportunity to leave." As a result of the allegedly unwarranted arrests, the protesters sued the city.

Despite an over $2 million payout to the plaintiffs to settle the lawsuit, a lawyer for the city contends that the NYPD did nothing wrong in this situation. The city's attorney has been quoted as saying, "This settlement was reached without any admission of liability on behalf of the city, and the individual defendants."

And while that is still quite an operative force, quietly and steadily over the years it has been supplanted by the Entertainment Industrial Complex (EIC). This impacts everyone's life moment by moment a hundred times more than the MIC. You see, the EIC are masters of two important things: manipulating desire and choice, and disempowering people. They use 'entertainment' to create the desire and the emptiness that makes you buy what they produce. And although in principle it's not that different from the Roman coliseum, with the reach of technology, it's overpowering. Is The Military Trying To Make War Fun?

Forget about boot camp, the next U.S. military training regiment may take place in a location that more resembles an arcade than rugged terrain.

Internationally, countries are increasingly using the same hardware and software that is utilized in gaming systems like: Halo, Splinter Cell, and Xbox; to control military equipment, and fight wars.

Remote controls that are extremely similar to the ones used to operate gaming systems, are being implemented to control military aircraft and ground robots. Army recruiting paraphernalia is also reportedly being adapted to reflect the usage of the new game-like apparatus.

According to The Wired's website, a blogger "spotted a British Army recruiting advertisement which seemed to show troops using an Xbox 360 controller to pilot a small drone." Curious about the advertisement, the blogger "used the Freedom of Information Act to find out if he was right." The response that he received from his inquiry, is as follows: "The system used to control the planes has been adapted by Lockheed Martin and although the controller used by the soldiers to fly the plane is very similar to a Microsoft Xbox 360 controller, it is not the same. You will see that there is no Microsoft wording on the controller nor a wired headset port."

My concern is that by replicating the imaginary game-like atmosphere on the real life battlefield, the military will be able to make a soldier out of almost anyone. Members of the upcoming generation who would be consciously turned off by the blood and gore of war, may now be enticed to participate in creating carnage from a detached distance. By "turning war into a video game," the new age soldiers will not have to view the immediate, gory repercussions of their actions.

And there may be some way that it can actually take us to a higher level of our existence, where we can understand the world and our relationship to things and people in a deeper way, and we can ultimately make more meaning for ourselves and our world. Elsie Law's Daily Dose Of The Law

Jim Crow laws were laws that were enacted in the United States in various states and municipalities, with the express purpose of implementing racial segregation.

Jim Crow laws were prominent for almost a century. They emerged the year slavery supposedly ended, and continued until 1965.

These laws were the laws that made it legal for Black people to be coerced to: sit on the back of the bus, drink out of "Blacks Only" water fountains, use "Blacks Only" restrooms, and attend segregated schools. Jim Crow laws also prevented Black people from using libraries, parks, and other "public" facilities in certain states.

The proclaimed origins of the term "Jim Crow" is varied. Some say that the name came from the term "Jump Jim Crow," which was a mocking song-and-dance used to belittle African Americans. Others say that the name came from a slave character that was created by a New York City born White actor who helped popularize blackface.

According to The Gothamist, the MTA wants to completely phase out the use of toll booths within the next four years.

In lieu of toll booths, the MTA is proposing that commuters be mandated to pay their tolls via E-Z Pass, or via a system in which non-E-Z Pass users would be billed after being identified with license plate cameras.

The Legal Eagles Legal Brief: The Case Of The Suppression Of Evidence

The following excerpt comes from, “The Innocent Man” By: John Grisham. It discusses the law regarding suppression of evidence by the prosecution during legal proceedings.

“In a famous 1963 decision, Brady v. Maryland, the U.S. Supreme Court held that ‘the suppression by the prosecution of evidence favorable to an accused upon request violates due process where the evidence is material either to guilt or to punishment, irrespective of the good faith or bad faith of the prosecution.’

Investigators all have resources. Frequently, they uncover witnesses or other evidence favorable to a suspect or defendant. For decades they could simply ignore this exculpatory evidence and proceed with a prosecution. Brady leveled the field and instantly became ingrained in criminal procedure. A Brady request is one of many routine motions a criminal defense lawyer files early in the case. A Brady motion. A Brady hearing. Brady material. ‘I nailed him on Brady.’ The case worked its way into the vernacular of criminal law practice.” -From, “The Innocent Man” By: John Grisham

This includes: (1) Speech that is part of an act the law traditionally would consider criminal, (2) Defamation, (3) Obscenity, and (4) Speech that incites violence.

Book Excerpt Of The Week- Part 3, "Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome" By: Dr. Joy Leary

"Beliefs are powerful! They strongly influence how we think, feel, and behave. And their influence can be negative or positive. If a person has negative beliefs about their value and skills, they will often self sabotage their efforts or cease trying at all. If a person has a positive belief about their ability and worth, they are more likely to achieve the results they are after.

When we believe ourselves to be unworthy or incapable these beliefs have little basis in fact, yet they can still be powerful influences. What we need most in these instances is evidence to the contrary. If we can see that we are, in fact, valuable, that we are, in fact able, we will change our beliefs about ourselves accordingly." -From, "Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome" By: Dr. Joy Leary

Book Excerpt Of The Week- Part 2, "Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome" By: Dr. Joy Leary

"Rather than crush self-esteem, we must do everything in our power to build it. Rather than be torn down by the anger that is present within us, we must be able to create and maintain a state of inner well being. Rather than allowing our children to be socialized by a racist society, we must consciously and deliberately educate and socialize them to understand their inherent nobility." -From, "Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome" By: Dr. Joy Leary

Book Excerpt Of The Week- Part 1, "Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome" By: Dr. Joy Leary

"Some families take time to consider all that went well for them the previous day, to explore ways of making things even better, and plan what will go well the next day. Imagine every Black family doing this every day. It wouldn't take lone for you and your children to get in the habit of paying attention to the impact all of us have on others, and refining the impacts of our contributions. Everyday we would have evidence of the good that we do, and hence evidence of our value.

Where we are harboring beliefs that undermine our esteem, attending to the positive impacts we have will begin to destroy such limiting and fallacious beliefs. Creating value on a daily basis will provide strong, incontrovertible evidence of our efficacy and worth. False and negative beliefs about esteem and efficacy are some of the issues confronting many of us.

In the African American community there are many other false and negative beliefs that we leave unexamined. Beliefs about helplessness, beliefs about mainstream society, beliefs about victimization and many others that serve to put limits on what we can be, do, and have.

To address these falsehoods, we need to look at ourselves and a community as a whole from a strengths rather than from a deficit perspective. We need to identify, focus and articulate those positive characteristics in all of our interactions with our neighbors, co-workers, family and friends. And we need to especially share these encouraging observations with African American children whose views of themselves are still being shaped." -From, "Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome" By: Dr. Joy Leary

Elsie Law's Daily Dose Of The Law

Black's Law Dictionary Defines Trauma as: "A physical injury caused by a blow, or fall, or a psychologically damaging emotional experience. An injury, wound, shock, or the resulting condition or neurosis."

Invention (Of The Future?) Spotlight: The Invisibility Cloak

Two teams of scientists working with funding provided by th U.S. government, have discovered a way to render three-dimensional objects invisible. The groups of scientists, who are headquartered at the University of California, Berkeley, have utilized metamaterials to create a new type of material that can bend light in the wrong direction. The reversal of light wavelengths can nullify the eye's ability to visualize objects.

By creating a light bending material, the crafty scientists have completed the first step for manufacturing an invisibility cloak. Some people are worried about the military implications that can accompany the presence of such a cloak. However, the scientists working on the project say that the cloak may still be a little ways off.

According to "The Independent," one of the scientist working with the University of California groups has stated: "Immediate applications might be superior optical devices, or perhaps a microscope that could see a living virus. We are not actually cloaking anything. I don't think we have to worry about invisible people walking around any time soon. To be honest, we are just at the beginning of doing anything like that. However, cloaking may be something that this material could be used for in the future. You'd have to wrap whatever you wanted to cloak in the material. It would just send light around it. By sending light around the object that is to be cloaked, you don't see it."

Details on this world-changing invention will reportedly be released in Nature and Science journals in the very near future.

Cloud Seeding: The 2008 Beijing Olympics Connection

Soon after winning the bid to host the 2008 Summer Olympics, Beijing officials began a concerted effort to ensure great weather for the prestigious athletic competition. After studying weather patterns of the past three decades, the engineers at the Beijing Meteorological Bureau determined that there was a 50% chance of rain failing for both the opening and closing Olympic ceremonies. As a result of this forecast, Chinese officials made plans to utilize cloud seeding in order to induce rainfall a few days before the Olympics. [CLICK HERE for a background on the procedure of cloud seeding.] The forced, premature rainfall was supposed to "clean the air, and ensure clear skies" for the historic games.

If the controversial cloud seeding procedure was in fact used with the aforementioned intention, the project was unsuccessful. The opening days of the Olympics in Beijing was plagued with heavy downpours. Some events had to be postponed due to the showery weather.

We will have to stay tuned to see if the closing Olympic ceremonies are drier than the first couple of days of Olympic competition has been.

Cops Gone Wild Part 10: The Starbucks Entitlement Edition

A 14-year veteran, Chicago police officer was reprimanded by her city's police board for scaring Starbucks workers into supplying her with free coffee and baked goods. According to CNN, the Police Board ruled that the officer, "intimidated Starbucks employees by screaming at them and flashing her badge, handcuffs or gun when they wanted her to pay." The officer's attorney refutes this, stating that some coffeehouses voluntarily gave the officer free coffee. However, the Police Board has made its decision, and has handed down its ruling.

As a punishment for her actions, the officer was given a 15-month suspension and ordered to undergo counseling.

[SIDEBAR: I can only wish that other police boards and justices of the law would act so swiftly and justly in the handling of other cases of police misconduct and brutality.]

For Those People Who Say They Only Watch TV To See The News, This May Make You Want To Go On A Permanent TV Strike...

In his book, "The Assault On Reason," Al Gore discusses how television news is manipulated by the networks and the corporations that own them. Here's the excerpt:

"These conglomerates are apparently sometimes tempted to bend their news-programming choices to support the achievement of commercial objectives. The news divisions- which used to be seen as serving a public interest and were subsidized by the rest of the network- are now seen as profit centers designed to generate revenue and, sometimes, to advance the larger agenda of the corporation that owns them.

They have fewer reporters, fewer stories, smaller budgets, less travel, fewer bureaus, less independent judgment, more vulnerability to influence by management, and more dependence on government sources and canned public relations handouts.

The coverage of political campaigns, for example, focuses on the 'horse race' and little else. And the well known axiom that guides most local television news is 'If it bleeds, it leads.' (To which some disheartened journalists add, 'If it thinks, it stinks.')

For these and other reasons, the U.S. press was recently found the 53rd freest press in the world. NBC, to take only one prominent example, is slashing its news division in order to boost profits: It is cutting $750 million from its budget, a considerable amount from its news division.

This tragedy is compounded by the irony that this generation of journalists is the best-trained and most highly skilled in the history of their profession. But they are often not allowed to do the job that they have been trained to do. As Dan Rather put it, television news has been 'dumbed down and tarted up.'

The purpose of television news now seems primarily to be to 'glue eyeballs to the screen' in order to build ratings and sell advertising. This was the point made by Jon Stewart, the brilliant host of The Daily Show With Jon Stewart, when he visited CNN's Crossfire: There should be a distinction between news and entertainment. It really matters. The subjugation of news by entertainment seriously harms our democracy: It leads to dysfunctional journalism that fails to inform the people. And when people are not informed, they cannot hold government accountable when it is incompetent, corrupt, or both." From, "The Assault On Reason" By: Al Gore

Invention Spotlight: Cloud Seeding

The procedure of cloud seeding was discovered in 1946 by Vincent Schaefer, a meteorologist who worked as a researcher for General Electric. The controversial discovery was later refined by Schaefer's colleague Dr. Bernard Vonnegut.

Cloud seeding calls for chemicals, such as silver iodide or frozen carbon dioxide (known as dry ice), to be dispersed into the clouds in order to induce rain. These chemicals can be distributed into the sky via airplane, or via canisters launched from anti-aircraft guns or rockets.

Although the purpose of cloud seeding is to stimulate the the fall of precipitation, it has been noted that the process may also be a precipitation suppressant.

Cloud seeding has had its share of advocates and detractors. The advocates claim that cloud seeding can cure the ills brought on by drought, and can help better air quality. However, the detractors have noted that the bad way outweighs the good. Cloud seeding can have out of control results. It has also been used for sinister purposes.

It has been said that from March 1967 through July 1972, cloud seeding was used by the U.S. Military in an operation called "Operation Popeye." This operation used cloud seeding to extend the monsoon season in Vietnam; carrying out the pithy motto of "make mud, not war."

Cloud seeding has also be noted by some, as the reason for the hard rainfall that permeated throughout the 1969 Woodstock Festival.

Once put into action, the results of cloud seeding cannot be controlled. According to Times Online, it is believed that in 1952, "rainmaking experiments caused 90 million tons of water to fall into the Lynmouth Valley in North Devon, killing 35 people. Survivors said that the air smelt of sulphur and that the rain fell so hard that it hurt people's faces." Also, cloud seeding experiments performed in California during the late 70s "caused devastating floods in a part of the San Gabriel Mountains called Big Tunjunga Canyon, killing 11 people and causing $43 million of damage." Times Online also states that after the Big Tunjunga Canyon flooding, "many residents sued Los Angeles County, claiming that cloud seeding had worsened the rainfall." Although "the county prevailed in court, they stopped all rainmaking experiments until 1991."

It seems that cloud seeding is currently being used by various governments across the globe. The controlling nature of some officials is causing them to carelessly ignore what can happen when you play with mother nature.

Time's Up In New York Politics

In 2009, New York residents will be seeing a shuffling of their municipal officials. Due to term limits, new faces in new political positions will emerge.

The mayor, the comptroller, and the public advocate have all used up their turns at the dance. If they want to stay in the political game, they will have to run for different offices.

According to The NY Times, in addition to the inevitable change of leadership in the aforementioned positions, two thirds of the city council and four out of five borough presidents will also be ousted due to term limits. Many New York politicians are playing musical chairs, and are scrambling to reserve a seat somewhere in the city government for the upcoming year.

With all of the mandatory changes on the horizon, now is as good a time as any for New Yorkers to start wielding their political power.

The Precipitation Provokers

The procedure of "seeding clouds" allows scientists to manufacture rain. The controversial process calls for firing chemicals, like silver iodide, into the sky to increase the likelihood of rainfall. Seeding has been performed by contractors, like the North American Water Consultants, for over half-a-century. Los Angeles County has been one of their off-and-on clients since the late 50s.

A recent summertime, statewide drought was the reported catalyst of the state of California contracting the weather consultants to induce rain for them once again.

There are many critics who have voiced how detrimental cloud seeding can be. Rain making experiments can lead to flooding, mudslides, and other environmental hazards. According to Times Online, Don Griffith, the President of North American Weather Consultants, has turned a deaf-ear to the dissenters who think weather manipulation is wrong, by saying: "We are helping Mother Nature along a bit." However, I must ask: When has interfering with Mother Nature ever been a good idea?

A U.S. Navy Submarine Leaks Undetected Radioactive Water For 2 Years

A U.S. Navy submarine that has made trips to Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Guam, and Hawaii, reportedly leaked radioactive fluid as it did so. The leaky submarine has been allegedly emitting radioactive water since 2006. However, the Navy only recently discovered this when a build up of leak-water caused a covered valve to pop open, and spill contaminated water onto a sailor's leg.

According to CNN.com, the U.S. Navy has stated that "the leak was minor in both volume and radioactivity, and the radioactivity from the leaks in all foreign ports added up to less than that found in a smoke detector." Also, the sailor who was exposed to the radioactive water is said to have tested negative for radiation.

If the sailor who was exposed in fact tested negative for radiation, the question arises of: What were the effects that alerted Navy officials to the fact that the water was contaminated? There must have been some type of abnormal side effects that the inflicted sailor experienced after his exposure to the water that tipped them off to the presence of radioactive material.

[SIDEBAR: What effect does a radioactive leak from a submarine, however slight, have on sealife, and other forms of nature? I wounder if a radioactive leak could have been the cause of the creation of a creature like the Montauk Monster.
