The 25th Amendment was ratified in 1967 after the assassination of John F. Kennedy. The tragic killing of the popular president, prompted Congress to put an action plan in place in case a president or vice president was incapacitated.

The 25th Amendment was invoked for the first time by President Nixon, when his Vice President, Spiro Agnew, resigned amidst the Watergate quagmire.
