Bessie Blount was a physical therapist who worked with World War II veterans. Her work inspired her to invent a device that would make it feasible for amputees to feed themselves.
Reportedly, she was unable to find the support she needed to successfully market and produce her invention within her native country, America. Therefore, in 1952, Ms. Blount gave the patent rights to her invention to the French government. They gladly accepted it and put it to use.
