According to The Wall Street Journal, India is "the fastest growing mobile phone market in the world." Allegedly, in the first month of 2009, approximately 11 million of India's residents signed up for cellphone service.
Reportedly, a majority of the new customers come from the rural areas of India- part of the country's poorest sectors. People from the rural areas have not traditionally had the privilege of having telephone land lines. Therefore, having access to phone communication via cellular towers is becoming widely embraced in those areas.
While the profits of other industries continue to fall in India, the cellphone craze is bringing in hefty gains- thanks to India's rural population of well over half a billion people.
