Chicago-native, Lorraine Hansberry, penned the famous play- "A Raisin In The Sun." "A Raisin In The Sun" was the first play written by an African American woman to appear on Broadway. The highly praised play also received a New York Drama Critics Award- making Ms. Hansberry the youngest and first African American to receive the award.Lorraine Hansberry also wrote, "To Be Young, Gifted and Black," and "The Sign In Sidney Brustein's Window"- which also ran on Broadway.
Tragically, Lorraine's career was abbreviated when she died at the age of 34 of cancer.
