Elsie Law's Daily Dose Of The Law

New York City parents, the president of the teacher's union, and the city's public advocate, have all joined together and filed a lawsuit against the Department of Education and the Education Chancellor, Joel Klein. The defendants claim that the city is illegally closing regular schools and replacing them with charter schools.

The defendants are arguing that the closings have not been done within the confines of the law because the city has never gained the approval of parent councils and community school boards to perform them.

The abrupt school closings are also resulting in children in certain neighborhoods not having zoned schools to attend.
